(build 04)sample build

A sample build: how we would move a business from one message for everyone on a calendar to messages triggered by what each customer does. It shows our approach for a typical case, not results for a client.

the problem
Customer communication was mostly one message for everyone, sent on a calendar rather than on behaviour.
built for
More relevant messages and retention that runs on its own.

  1. 01

    Customer data

Orders, sign-ups and site behaviour are brought together from Shopify, the CRM and GA4 into one customer profile in a tool such as Klaviyo or HubSpot.

  2. 02

    Segmentation

Customers are grouped by what they bought, how recently and how often, and where they are in the lifecycle, from new to lapsed.

  3. 03

    Behaviour trigger

Flows start on real events such as a first purchase, an abandoned cart, a viewed product or a gap since the last order.

  4. 04

    Personalisation

Each message pulls in the right product, name and offer, with an OpenAI or Claude model drafting variants that a person reviews before they go live.

  5. 05

    Email / WhatsApp / SMS

Messages go by the channel each customer responds to, using Klaviyo for email and SMS and the WhatsApp Business API, with consent handled per channel.

  6. 06

    Conversion

Every flow is tracked to the order it produced, with holdout groups so we can tell what the messages added.

  7. 07

    Win-back

Customers who go quiet get a short sequence to bring them back, then are suppressed if they do not respond, to protect deliverability.

(02)what we would measure

how we would know it works.

Consider this build if most of your customer messages are newsletters sent to the whole list. It suits businesses with a base of past customers who buy more than once, or could.
  • Repeat purchase rate
  • Revenue from automated flows
  • Time between orders
  • Win-back rate

(05)questions

this build, answered.

Typically a few weeks for the core flows, then more are added as you learn what works. The first phase connects customer data from Shopify, the CRM and GA4 into Klaviyo or HubSpot, builds the main segments and launches flows such as welcome, abandoned cart and win-back. WhatsApp can take longer if the Business API and message templates still need approval.

You need order history, sign-up details, consent for each channel and on-site events such as product views and abandoned carts. Most of this already sits in Shopify or your CRM and in GA4 or the Klaviyo tracking script. We connect it into one customer profile so a flow can start on what someone actually did, not on a calendar date.

You compare customers who got a flow with a holdout group who did not. Klaviyo and HubSpot can hold back a small random share of each segment, so the difference in orders between the two groups shows what the messages added. Without a holdout, reports credit flows with purchases that would often have happened anyway.
